Centers during the period 2009 – 11
Introduction
of
VRO
in Odisha
The
VRO India extended its activities to Odisha in the wake of a
devastating Cyclone in the year October l97l in the Coastal Belt of
Odisha. In the beginning, VRO started rehabilitation programs for the
Cyclone victims. Slowly it extended its activities from the Coastal
Belt to the Tribal belt in South Odisha in the year 1980 after the
devastating flood of River Vamsadhara. In the year 1983 VRO Odisha
declared its two Regions i,e North and South Odisha having its Area
Office at Cuttack Barabati Stadium for better coordination. Present
report highlights information on activities implemented during the
period 2OO9 - ll in Area-!, Odisha (North Odisha and South Odisha).
A)
Village Construction Activities
-
No new Village Rebuilding Program has been taken up since 2006.
Construction of 3 Twin houses for 6 families in "Gengutia
Village" (Bhandariphkhari Block of Bhadrakh District) was
pending due to land , problem. In the year 2009 that problem was
resolved and those houses were I , constructed and handed over to the
beneficiaries. Since 2004, 2 Twin houses for 5C families in "6uhalia
Village" (Anandapur Block of Keonjhar District) were also
pending due to land problem. In the year 20O9 that problem too was
resolved and those houses were constructed and handed over to the
beneficiaries. :
No
new Village Rebuilding Program has been taken up during above period.
B)
Programs and Service Centers
Totally,

Community
Child Care Centers are functioning in Area-|, Odisha,
i.e. 3 in North and 3 in South Odisha. This program includes
preschool education for Social, Physical and intellectual Development
of the 3-5 years age group Children. This Program is mostly used for
working Mothers in our Villages - the Children are left at the Center
and the Mothers attend to their day to day activities without any
disturbance. Women are provided with feasible and viable training by
the Child Care worker during the noon time. In the afternoon, the
CCCP worker visits one house daily and interacts with parents of a
child about child education, family planning and creates awareness
amongst them about health and sanitation. In the evening, the CCCP
worker also conducts adult education for the illiterate women to
develop their reading, writing and Arithmetic knowledge. After all,
the CCCP Worker is the bridge between the village and VRO as well as
Govt. Officials.
During
the
reporting
period, 03 Village Learning Centers are in operation in
North Odisha only, however no such program activities takes place in
South Odisha. The first Learning Centre is at Nanpur Village, at
present we have only 30 students in three classes i.e. in to 3d
standard in this center. All Villagers belong to the fisher-men
community which is recognized as Scheduled Caste. This is only one
hamlet where Government has not provided any education facility. VRO
provides mid-day meals to the Children, it. is purely a day School.
In the afternoon, the Learning Guide is also conducting Tailoring
training for the Village Girls.
Two
Juanga Tribal School are operating for the most primitive Tribal in
Keonjhar District in North Odisha i.e. Gupta 6anga and Bayakumutia.
The Centre primarily operates to preserve their language and culture,
from the clutches of modernization. The teachers are motivating the
Villagers to send their children regularly to Government Schools. ln
the afternoon, Children are taught the local dialect, for two hours.
There
are three Health Centers functioning in Keonjhar District of North
Odisha Region where accessibility to Medical facilities is poor.
These Centers spread awareness generation on Health Education, First
Aid, and mobilization of Women for using low cost and high nutritious
food items, rising of Kitchen 6ardens. Demonstrations and providing
Federal services are the main activities. Health workers are in close
association with the functionaries of local PHCs who visit these
Villages periodically. The identified chronic cases are referred to
the local Government Hospitals / Clinics. Special! Thrust is laid on
identification of HIV & AIDS infected cases, Patients with
Chronic diseases are provided with counseling & referral
services. Each Centre covers lO micro Villages / hamlets within its
activities, and selects one member in each village as health contact
person.
The
following are the activities:
Women
Empowerment, Skill Development, Raising Nurseries and Ecological
Development Activities, Providing Free Loan Assistance for
undertaking Income Generation Activities, Organizing Village Contact
Persons' (VCP) Meetings, Formation and Strengthening of Women
Self-Help Groups are implemented by the trained volunteers of VRO In
above two Regions.
During
the
reporting
period, BPTCs are functioning for Boys at Gonasika and
Girls at Bayakumutia in North region and for Boys at Kuangabasa and
6irls at Tumudibandh in South region. The BPTCs are focusing at
developing leadership skills and vocational / skill for the Children
in the age group of 14 - 15 years. School drop-out children from
surrounding Villages are enrolled in the BPTCs. Follow up activities
are undertaken for mobilizing and accessing possible local resources
for setting up production units.
One
Village Development Training Center for Women youth, in the age group
of 15-25 years is in operation at Ashapuri in Birogobindapur Revenue
Village of Keonjhar District. On completion of the training, the
trainees are awarded with Certificates and most of them could get
appropriate employment in VRO as well as Government and Non -
Governmental Organizations. 25 Trainees hailing from the surrounding
Villages are enrolled in this VRO VDTC Center. Their educational
qualification is from l0th Standard and above. Tailoring &
Embroidery training skills are being evaluated by USHA International
Sewing School. The successful Trainees are awarded with Merit
Certificates given by the USHA International Sewing School. The
training course includes Tailoring, Embroidery & Dress designing,
Computer Fundamentals, Different types of Handicrafts, Aplique, Paper
Bags, etc., Basic Health Education is also provided. A Government
Medical Officer is conducting Health class once in a week.
Old
Age Home with 30 senior citizens (for adult men and women of above 60
years) is in operation at Ashapuri in Birogobindapur revenue village
of Keonjhar District, for the neglected aged to cater to the social
and emotional needs of the senior citizens. They are provided with
residential care by our volunteers.
C)
Micro Project(s)
Small
Saving
and
Credit Program (S.S.C.P):
As
per the decision of 6o8 - VRO (India) Fr. George D'souza is guiding
this program. In this reporting period, VRO Odisha provided loans to
l0 Women beneficiaries in Sandhapur Village of Sundaria Gram
Panchayat, Dharmasala Block of Jaipur District on 11th
April'2011. The Beneficiaries are keen to start business in Poultry,
Goat Rearing, Sheep Rearing and Sale of Vegetables. This is purely a
pilot project. The beneficiaries to pay back the loan amount in 10
installments, without interest. The recovered amount would be used as
revolving fund, thus assisting at many beneficiaries as possible.

Andhra covers Hyderabad, Rajahmundry & Kothakota regions
encompassing
Rangareddy,
Nalgonda,
East
& West Godavari and Visakhapatnam Districts in
Andhra
Pradesh,
India.
The
highlights of the Area for the period 2OOg - ll are mentioned below:
The
target groups in Hyderabad Region mostly are the Tribal’s known as
the Lambadas (semi nomadic tribes or the gypsies). Three Village
Re-building Programs were completed during the period 2009 - 11. They
are:
-
Biyyapu
Thippa
II – named “Sadhana Nagar”, consisting of 28 families (14 twin
houses - Cyclone Resistant Houses) was inaugurated on 30-O4-2OO9. The
Entwicklungshilfe Klub, Austria supported Biyyapu Thippa ll.
-
Chollangi
I
& II – a Village of 36 families (18 twin houses) was Inaugurated
on O4-06-2010. These are "Tsunami" (Cyclone-Resistant) Houses. Chollang
is supported by the HAAR Community, Germany, represented by Ms. Theresa
Heil.
(18
twin houses) and was inaugurated by giving it a new name
“SeethaNagar".
The
Entwicklungshilfe Klub, Austria assisted this Village.
Twin
houses) was inaugurated on 01-05-2009. The Missions Prokur, Germany
sponsored
this village.
The
semi nomadic tribe was inaugurated on 04'02-2011. The new name of the
Village is "Sag Nagar". This Village is supported by the
Students of the KV School of Business, Zurich (S\)(/IVRO),
Switzerland.

Hyderabad Region was started in December, 2010.

and
Service Centers

Community
Child Care Centers are run in the 3 regions of Andhra
North Area. The CCC Program is aimed at developing the Social,
Physical and intellectual faculties of the Children in the age group
of 3 - 5 years. Young Girls from the rural areas of the target
Villages of VRO, who have attained special technical training at the
VRO Village Health and Child Development Guides (VHCDG) are selected
and posted at the VRO Villages to serve as teachers.
Six
(06) Village Learning Programs are in operation during the reporting
year 2OO9 - 11. The Children / Trainees of these Schools have the
privilege of attaining Government prescribed syllabus education which
enables them to pursue higher studies in their future careers.
In
all, 06 Health Centers are functioning, providing Health Education,
First Aid, Counseling and Referral Services to the people living in
rural areas. Our Health Workers are in close association with the
functionaries of local Primary Health Centers (PHCs) who provide us
additional health services where ever required. The Rural Health
Center at Chinthala Thanda (Hyderabad Region) provides all necessary
assistance to patients afflicted with Leprosy.
There
are 02 Women Empowerment Programs - one each in Hyderabad and
Kothakota regions; Here, Young Girls between the age group of 15 - 25
are taught technical skills like Tailoring, Embroidery, Sari
Painting, Handy-Crafts and Designer Bags and other Allied skills.
These technical programs are evaluated by Governmental Agencies like
the Ministry of Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government
of India and the Janshikhana Sansthan (Peoples' Education
Institution), a subsidiary of Ministry of Human Resource Development,
Government of India. Government recognized certificates are issued to
the successful candidates. Small Savings and Credit Program (SSCP)
was introduced in Hyderabad region and soft loans were given to 25
Women beneficiaries of Rekhyanayak Thanda (15 beneficiaries) and
Vasuram Thanda (10 beneficiaries) in Devathpalli Circle.
During
the
reporting
period, 02 BPTCs, both for Girls are functioning in
Hyderabad and Rajahmundry regions. The BPTCs are focusing at
developing leadership skills and vocational I skill development for
Trainees in the age group of '14 - 20 years.
Three
(03) very strong CLR Centers are functioning at Rajanagaram,
Jaggampeta and Prathipadu Villages in Rajahmundry Region. Over 280
Children / Trainees are provided with Formal Education and Technical
Skills such as Tailoring and Carpentry. Most of these Children /
Trainees belong to the vulnerable groups who are prone to child labor
situations and are
exploited
by
unscrupulous
elements. Thanks to the efforts put in by Non
Governmental Organizations like the VRO, and strong Legal Enactments
introduced by Government of Andhra Pradesh to abolish child labor,
the scenario is changing and the number of Chitd Laborers is
dwindling in East and West Godavari Districts. Efforts are on to
provide assistance to Orphans, Semi-orphans and socially
discriminated Children at our CLR Centers..
One
(01) Children's Village namely Madhapuram (tribal Village) in
Rajahmundry Region is being run to provide educational needs for
School drop-outs. Totally, 15 Children / Trainees are benefited by
this program by getting residential care.
--
Devathpalli Service Center (92 km) in Hyderabad Region, a VDTC
training program is functioning for the benefit of Trainees (Boys) in
the age group of 15 - 20 years. Technical Training in House Wiring,
Motor Rewinding, Hand Pumps Repairs and Computer Education is
provided.
At
the Health Center, Rajulaloya (Hyderabad Region), a Multi Purpose
Health Workers (MPHW) Course for Girls was introduced in the year
2OA9. This is a professional course conducted by the Board of
Intermediate Education (Vocational Training Course), Government of
Andhra Pradesh.
.
For
Senior Citizens above 60 years of age, an Old Age Home is established
at Neemanayak Thanda at 132 kms stone in Hyderabad Region. Twenty
Senior Citizens benefit from this "Home' which is providing
humanitarian services for unfortunate souls who have been abandoned
by their near and dear ones.

Village
Construction
Activities
The
present report highlights information on activities implemented
during the period 2009 - 11 in the Regions namely 6untur, Nellore,
Kadapa and Tamilnadu in Andhra South.

The Village 'Dindi Adavala' was inaugurated with a new name "Vimukthi
Nagar" by the
representatives
of
SWIVRO
and the local leaders

The Village Pragnam (tribal Village) was inaugurated on the 11th
of March, 2Oll'by Dr,
Robert
Wychera
from
Austria with a new name "Pragathi Nagar".

The Village Pedapatnam was inaugurated on the l9th of April, 20ll by
the local MLA and
other
leaders with a new name "Sri Krishna Nagar"
-
The work is in good progress at Jangamalanka. Two model Houses are
inaugurated by Dr.
Robert
Wychera,
the
representative from Entwicklungshilfe Club, Austria.
The
following is the status of the 05 Villages which were under
construction during the period. 'Melanelatur" Vallamedu and
Obulayapalli were inaugurated.

We
hope that by the end of May, 2011, all the Villages under
construction will be inaugurated (except Jangamlanka in Guntur region
started in October, 2010).
We
could initiate House Construction activities for the excluded Yanadi
families under the co-financing of the local Government Departments.
Money will be transferred under the Housing Schemes into the
individual Women Savings Bank Accounts and further the amount will be
contributed by the people for construction activity.
B.
Programs

Service Centers
Community
Child
Care
Program (CCCPs):
Totally,

Community
Child Care Centers are run in South Andhra Area in the
four regions. CCCP is basically for Social, Physical and intellectual
Development of the Children in the age group of 3 - 5 years. This
Program is mostly used by working Mothers in our Villages - the
Children are left at the Center and the Mothers attend to their
routine duties without any disturbance. Women are provided with
feasible and viable training by the Child Care worker during the noon
time.
During
the
reporting
period, 03 Village Learning Centers are in operation.
The Tamil Village. Learning Center at Perecherla caters to the needs
of Tamilnadu) / migrant quarry workers children in Tamil medium of
instruction. Children of f u stone quarry workers, fisher-folk and
Yandi tribes are making use of these VLPs.
VRO
provides residential care and the children are sent to local primary
and upper primary schools run by the local Government Departments.
Transit Schools are organized for the benefit of Tribal Children
(providing functional literacy and capacitating the never enrolled /
drop-out children) into formal education centers. Children at our CVs
are provided with residential care and additional tuitions for better
performance in the schools.

central locations in Andhra South.

reporting
period, BPTCs are functioning for Boys at Gandhi Nagar
in Nellore region and for Girls at Varenyanagar in Nellore &
Thotlapalli in Kadapa regions. The BPTCs are focusing at developing
leadership skills and vocational / skill development for the Children
in the age group of 12 -'16 years. Follow up activities are
undertaken for mobilizing and accessing possible local resources for
setting up production units.
The
residential center CLRC at Ananthavaram in Nellore region has been
providing Education and Skills such as Tailoring and Carpentry to
about 55 Children; both Boys and Girls, in the age group of O6 - ll
years. Most of these Children hail from Dalit, Tribal and Backward
Class families and are School drop - outs and never enrolled in
Formal Education Schools run by the locate Government Departments.
The Children are prone to child labor situations due to the poverty
situations and illiteracy / ignorance of the parents.
Three
Centers known as "Children’s Villages" are being run to
cater to the educational needs of Orphans and Semi - orphan children.
A few Children from the broken families and the poorest families are
also enrolled in these centers. On the whole 96 Children are getting
benefited by this program. These Centers are providing residential
care and motherly affection to these Children residing in our
Centers.

Three
Village Development Training Center for youth, in the age group 16-25
years are in operation at Rajupalem, Arogyanagar and Puthur, on
completion of the training, the trainees are awarded with
Certificates and most of them could get appropriate employment in
their regions. Each center is equipped with 20 trainees belonging to
VRO affiliated Villages and other backward villages in the
neighborhood.
A
mini Old Age Home with 16 senior citizens (for adult men and women of
above 60 years) has been run at Perecherla for the neglected aged to
cater to the social and emotional needs of the senior citizens. They
are provided with residential care by our volunteers.
